HEAD PROTECTION RESEARCH LABORATORY (HPRL)

is a scientific laboratory with extensive equipment for testing and evaluating helmets and other forms of head protection equipment. HPRL tests, analyzes and evaluates motorcycle helmets, bicycle helmets, aviation helmets, industrial safety helmets and various related sports helmets and equipment. In addition, HPRL conducts specialized research on motorcycle accidents with major projects in Europe and Asia. Comprehensive research files are maintained on thousands of motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents and the detailed autopsy procedures to determine head and neck injuries in fatal accidents.

Product Testing and Evaluation

Over the years of its existence, both at USC and at the recently established independent laboratory, HPRL has conducted detailed investigations of more than 3500 motorcycle accidents (with 300 special head and neck autopsy procedures) and more than 900 bicycle accidents. In addition, many motor vehicle accidents, airplane and helicopter accidents and various industrial accidents have been included to produce a special data base from which authoritative findings and recommendations have been presented in the interests of public safety.
